St Aidan's Celebration at Ushaw August 1951

Rosary Rally a long time agoAugust 1951 Celebrations, with Pontifical Mass, at Ushaw to mark the 13th centenary of the death of St Aidan

The photo shows a general view of the temporary sanctuary erected in the central ball-place on the Bounds at Ushaw. 

The Press said there were 30,000 people there. 

Archbishop Joseph Masterson of Birmingham was the celebrant, with Father Hugh Lavery as deacon and Mr ( Father) Austin Tomany as subdeacon.  The throne opposite the camera was for Cardinal Griffin who presided.

The building in the background is the recently renovated dormitories above the Douai Room.The photograph was taken before the Retreat wing (East Wing) was built.

This picture is again of the August 1951 Celebrations at Ushaw to mark the 13th centenary of the death of St Aidan

It shows Archbishop Masterson in the procession to the altar for the Celebration of Mass.
