St Dominic's Priory Church, Newcastle upon Tyne
Deanery:
2: St Andrew and St Anthony
Episcopal Area:
B: Newcastle and North Tyneside
Pastor(s):
Our beautiful Priory church, dedicated to St Dominic, was built over the foundations of Hadrian's Wall and was opened amid great ceremony by Cardinal Manning in 1873.
It is served by a community of friars of the Order of Preachers (also known as Dominicans, or Blackfriars because of their ‘religious habit’).
The Order, having spent exactly 300 years in Newcastle before being forced to leave in 1539 after the Reformation, were invited back to the city in 1860 to help administer to the spiritual needs of the city’s growing Irish community, many of whom lived in conditions of extreme poverty.
For 130 years now many generations of people in Newcastle have found a spiritual home at St Dominic’s, and we want our church to continue to be a meeting place for friends, united by the common purpose of worship of Almighty God and service to our fellow human beings.
We hope you find here a truly welcoming community, united as a family with its different interests, personalities, talents and needs.
Whether you have lived here for some time, or have recently moved into the area, we would be delighted to welcome you into our parish community.
