Apostleship of the Sea News - AOS Open Day November 2007
An Open Day, held by the Apostleship of the Sea at St Bede’s Social Club in South Shields attracted a significant number of people from around the diocese, all keen to learn more about the work being done by the AOS for seafarers.
A display of materials and literature included features on each (in fact all) of the commercial ports in the region where the AOS has a presence, and AOS workers were on hand to chat to visitors over a cup of tea about the outreach they provide through this Agency of the Catholic Church in Great Britain.
The AOS is currently active in the ports of; Berwick upon Tweed, Blyth, Tyne, Sunderland, Seaham, Hartlepool and North Tees (and also at South Tees in the diocese of Middlesbrough).

Potential volunteers also came forward offering their services as Parish Contacts, Ship Visitors, providers of warm clothing, or as woolly hat knitters. We were also delighted to welcome several visitors who have great links with the AOS in the past, particularly through Westoe Towers, the former AOS Residential Centre for seafarers.
The AOS NE branch is currently seeking potential Ship Visitors in various ports, particularly at this time in Blyth and Hartlepool. Anybody interested in learning more about ship visiting should contact Tony McAvoy, Lay Chaplain and NE Regional Co-ordinator on 0771 392 4504.
