La Lumiére Initiative was established in 2006 and focuses on four countries in Africa: Togo, Benin, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
La Lumiére is supported by St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Murton and also by other schools in the North East.
La Lumiére works to help some of the poorest countries in the world, supporting education and training, water and health projects, and in particular recognises the urgency of providing communities with clean accessible water and public latrines.
Noepe Village Project, Togo
Joanne Jones, Head of St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Murton, and whose school is involved in the project says: "In August 2007 we met with the village elders and community representatives of Noepe. They explained that they had many needs but their priorities were:
Public latrines: They identified 3 areas– the village centre, the market place and next to the dispensary.
Repair of the school water tank and resources to aid learning
.A community library for the village - elders identified a disused post office as an ideal location."
