Justice & Peace Mass and AGM 2019

On Saturday 11 May over seventy people attended the Annual Mass for Justice and Peace. Mgr. Faley presided and Fr. Chris Hughes preached. The Mass acknowledged CAFOD's Campaign 'Our Common Home'.

In his homily Fr. Chris acknowledged the sense of urgency in responding to the climate crises, not least since the world was more unstable. This is not a good situation when so many nations have destructive nuclear capability. He also acknowledged that in being addicted to our consumer lifestyles, like all addictions we are only free of them by realising that we are dependent on God's grace.

In the AGM, Joe Kirwan talked about the work of the Mercy Hub, in responding to those who are sleeping rough, do not have a permanent home or are feeling isolated.

Sarah Croft from the Campaign Team at CAFOD talked more about the goals of the Common Home in seeking zero net carbon emissions by 2045.

Fr. Chris spoke about the Diocesan Policy in response to Laudato Si 'Hearing the Cry of the Earth and the Poor'. In the discussion that followed there were helpful suggestions as to how the policy could be 'rolled out' throughout diocesan parishes and schools.

At the business part of the AGM, Liz Archibald was re-elected as Chair of the Justice and Peace Co-Ordinating Council. A vote of thanks was given to Pat Conway who is standing down having done important and sterling work as treasurer for a number of years.
