Reflection on the Beda Experience in Rome in May2007

A reflection from one of our Enquirers who went on the Beda Experience in Rome in May:

“I arrived in Rome May 4th to stay until 13th for Easter. Fr. Breen, the Vice Rector of the Beda welcomed me at the airport as promised, as we collected another enquirer who was there for the same reasons as myself.

We arrived at the college and were shown our rooms etc, and then met the Rector, Fr. Rod Strange. They say that first impressions are what counts, and they counted. The welcome by all at the college was a credit to them, and came very natural to all. Their helpfulness, kindness, and listening was excellent. The information on what was happening within college life over the Easter and in free time was well explained.

The next day Fr. Strange gave us a talk about the history of the college that was very informative, followed by an opportunity for questions. We all had a chance to introduce ourselves and begin to get to know each other.

The Vice Rector, Fr. Breen also gave a talk on the courses that are held in each academic year. This was of great benefit to us all. He assured us that help would be given for this academic study. I felt this would be a practical challenge to myself.

We were quite a mixed bunch of people, with one lad even from Poland, but we all had a common bond that quickly gelled us together. We arranged trips out to all the famous places in Rome, even going to Assisi to visit St. Francis! Much discussion took place on these trips, and friendships formed, with people exchanging addresses and email contacts.

Meal times and the bar were good opportunities to talk with the students at the college, who helped to answer questions each of us had, as we listened to one another’s questions.

My overall impression of the Beda Experience was very good. I felt comfortable because of the similar ages and backgrounds of people which put me at my ease. Being able to see Rome and Assisi was superb. I did feel that I would love to have had maybes a couple of days' experience of the typical day of the college, with the writing of essays, to really feel what is needed, rather than just speaking about it. But I had a great time and met many excellent people. Thank you all.”
