Rev. Mr. David Jonathon Bowes - Ordination to the Priesthood.

The priestly ordination of Rev. Mr. David Jonathon Bowes is due to take place on Saturday 3 October at St. Mary's Cathedral at 11.00am with Bishop Robert Byrne CO as principal celebrant.

For those who are unable to attend due to current COVID-19 restrictions, but would like follow along online, the Cathedral will be streaming the the ordination through their YouTube Channel.

An Ordination Booklet has been produced to follow the Mass.


Online Vocations Discernment Course

The Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle Priestly Vocations Team invite you to a six week online Vocations Discernment course for men thinking about becoming a Priest. Beginning Monday 12 October at 7.00pm.

‘Tools for Discerning the Action of God in my Life’

A Zoom programme over five sessions, for young women and men, offering input, and time for reflection and prayer. There will also be suggestions to use between sessions, to enable you to deepen your reflection.

The five sessions began on Saturday 19 September 2020 and the next session will be held on Saturday 24 October, entitled, ‘Reflective living’. The remaining sessions and dates are as follows:

  • Saturday 21 November 2020 – ‘Living in a discerning way

  • Saturday 23 January 2021 – ‘Exploring choices and decisions we have made

  • Saturday 27 February 2020 – ‘Gathering the threads and the ways ahead

Mass for Seminarians and Enquirers

On Monday 30 December 2019, Bishop Robert celebrated Mass at St Aidan’s Church, Ashington for Seminarians and enquirers. Many people came from the Brinkburn Partnership to pray for Vocations to the Priesthood.

After Mass there was a buffet lunch for the Bishop, Seminarians, Enquirers and the vocations team.

A Day of Discernment for Priestly Vocation

On Saturday 30 November a day of discernment for priestly vocation was held at Our Lady and St. Columba’s Church, Wallsend.

The day began with Mass, followed by some input and discussion time. The group then ate together and finished off the afternoon with a time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

There will be other days like this in the New Year.

Vocations Mass 2019

As part of the Dowry Tour of Our Lady of Walsingham, a Mass was celebrated by Fr. Christopher Warren (Diocesan Vocations Director) on Friday 25 October, concelebrated by priests of the Diocese praying for priestly vocations. Bishop Robert was present at the Mass and gave the blessing at the end. Many people gathered for this Mass at which Father Christopher reminded us of the importance to encourage the young men of our parishes to think seriously and listen carefully to the call of God to service in His Church as Priests.

The new Diocesan image for Priesthood (the icon of Christ the Priest) was displayed in the Cathedral for the celebration of the Mass. This icon was blessed by Bishop Robert on the Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. The image shows Jesus who gives us Himself in the Eucharist, Jesus is portrayed wearing priestly vestments close to his heart is St. Cuthbert’s Cross, the symbol of our Diocese. The icon reminds us that Jesus continues to call others to follow Him and lay down their lives in His service as priests.
