Good Friday Procession of Witness in Sunderland

The wind felt as though is was blasting straight down from the arctic, but that did not stop hundreds of people turning out for the annual Good Friday Procession of Witness on Sunderland's Tunstall Hill.
At least the snow showers held off as students from Sunderland University volunteered to carry the heavy wooden cross along the track that leads up to one of the highest points in the city. After the cross was secured into place, there followed a short ecumenical service.
Tunstall Hills form a dramatic setting for this popular Easter event, which was originally started by parishioners from the nearby Catholic church of St Cecilia more than 40 years ago. While the cross is set into place, those gathered on the hill can enjoy spectacular views stretching from the Scottish borders in the north, all the way down to the North Yorkshire Moors in the south.
