CAFOD 2011 Romero Lecture
Romero and the Social Gospel: The Challenge for Us Today
This lecture was given on March 24th - the 31st anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero, and on what is now known as Romero Day - declared by the UN to be the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims.
The lecture was organised by CAFOD and the Romero Trust, and the speaker, Fr Juan Hernadez Pico, is a Jesuit theologian based at the Romero Pastoral Centre, part of the Central American University (UCA)
Fr Juan spoke about Archbishop Romero, who he knew personally, describing the events leading up to his murder, and the political situation in San Salvador at that time, following in Romero's footstepsand pointing to Romero's challenge to us today:
"In this talk, dear friends, I have not tried to make theology of Romero's life, and explain it in different categories, rather, I have followed Romero's footsteps during the the three years and one month of his episcopate and I have tried to make his voice come alive among you"
